Is it possible to hike to Everest Base Camp in the winter

Everest Gokyo Lake Trek
Everest Gokyo Lake Trek

Yes, you can go to EBC in the winter months. The road to EBC usually doesn’t receive heavy snow, so getting there is no problem. The “tent hotels” are not open during the winter months and the Rongbuk Government Hotel is also usually closed. The Rongphu Monastery guesthouse usually remains open as do the guesthouses in Tashi Dzom and Basum (both a little over an hour north of EBC). Tibet is closed each year in February and March so it is not possible to go to Everest or any other area of Tibet during that time.

From mid december to February, trekking to Everest Base Camp is off season in Nepal. Sometime, heavy snow falls during these months obstructing the trekking routes but if you are adventure enthusiast and still wish to trek, you may trek to Everest Base Camp during winter with the proper trekking gears and experienced Everest Base Camp Trekking guide. Accommodation in Everest will open all round a year. I am sure that there will be at least a hotel opened everyday. Winter means extremely cold season so just pack as much as possible warm cloths. It will be colder in high altitudes. May be during the day you can walk with fleece but will surely need proper quality down jacket for evening and morning. A good sleeping bag is plus.

Everest Base Camp Trek Best Time Of Year

Everest Base Camp Trek with My Everest Trip

When you are setting plan for Trekking Holidays to Everest Base Camp, you might be worried about the best time of the year. Generally, trekking in Spring from March to May and Autumn Season from September to November are the best months for trekking to Mt. Everest base Camp. During this time, weather and climate is good to have breathtaking views of World's highest mountain peaks and days are clear. You will have opportunity to capture the spectacular views of glorious Himalayas.

Whereas the Monsoon months from June to July are so recommended for Everest Base camp Trek because of huge black cloud on the sky obstructing the mountain views. On the other hand, during the winter months from December to February are also not favorable for trekking to Everest as the weather is freezing cold and the chances of snowfall is high blocking the routes.

My Everest Trip Suggestion
Trekking in Nepal is possible all the time in a year and the best time to trek for Everest Base Camp is during Spring and Autumn season with the clear sky and Himalayas views. During these time, the route, flight and tea-houses are busy and crowded with the trekkers along the route.
